As parliamentary elections concluded in Russia, the country faced a significant escalation in hostilities with Ukraine. On the final day of voting, Ukraine launched an extensive drone assault targeting Moscow and its surrounding regions, according to Russian authorities. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reported that over 1,600 drones had been intercepted since the onset of the offensive, with approximately 450 aimed at the capital. The Moscow Oil Refinery was among the sites hit by the drones, while a residential structure in the Moscow region also sustained damage, leading to the evacuation of roughly 400 residents from a 21-storey apartment building.
The timing of the assault coincided with Russia’s first parliamentary elections since its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. While Russian officials accused Ukraine of seeking to disrupt the election process, the strikes were part of Ukraine’s ongoing strategy to target critical Russian military and energy infrastructure.
