In the face of ongoing regional challenges, European leaders have convened in western Ukraine for the first-ever Carpathian 8 Summit, a new forum aimed at enhancing cooperation among eight countries. This meeting, taking place from September 18 to 20 in Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast, is designed to address crucial issues like security, energy, and cross-border economic collaboration within the region.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is hosting the summit, which includes participation from leaders and officials of Ukraine, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Czechia, Hungary, Slovakia, and Austria. Notable attendees include Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, Romanian President Nicusor Dan, and Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, with Slovakia represented by a senior foreign ministry official. The summit’s agenda is focused on strengthening transport and energy infrastructures, improving regional mobility, and expanding trade and investment links across the Carpathian region. This initiative aims to foster economic growth and enhance regional stability through collaborative efforts and shared interests. As part of the economic discussions, around 500 business representatives have gathered, highlighting the summit’s commitment to driving forward substantial investment opportunities.
President Zelensky announced that investment agreements and projects worth more than €1 billion are in the pipeline, with nearly 100 projects from the participating countries being showcased. This signals a major push for economic development and integration, which is crucial for the prosperity of the region.
Poland reiterated its unwavering support for Ukraine during the summit, emphasizing the importance of regional cooperation and the need for coordinated efforts to facilitate Ukraine’s European integration. This forum also serves as a platform for dialogue among countries with varying positions on military assistance to Kyiv, fostering a nuanced understanding of shared strategic interests.
