US First Lady Melania Trump is poised to host Russian and Ukrainian representatives at the White House on November 5, in a diplomatic effort linked to her involvement in a recent ceasefire in Ukraine’s Kherson region. This initiative follows her role in facilitating a temporary five-day ceasefire in Oleshky, which was under Russian occupation, allowing for the evacuation of numerous civilians.
The White House announced that Melania Trump will address the ceasefire initiative during an event scheduled for 11 a.m. Eastern Time on Thursday. Her office reported that she independently initiated dialogue between the conflicting sides and helped broker the humanitarian agreement that resulted in the ceasefire from October 27 to November 1.
The ceasefire enabled several hundred civilians to relocate, primarily to areas under Ukrainian control. Dmytro Lubinets, Ukraine’s Parliamentary Commissioner for Human Rights, acknowledged the crucial role played by Melania Trump’s team in securing the agreement and managing the evacuation. He noted that representatives from Ukraine, Russia, and the United States signed the ceasefire document, with the US acting as a guarantor.
Despite the ceasefire, concerns continue regarding the situation in Oleshky. Ukrainian military officials have cautioned that Russian forces might have utilized the pause in hostilities to reposition equipment and fortify their positions. Ukrainian authorities have contested claims of military equipment movements during the ceasefire, attributing some activities to demining operations.
While many have left Oleshky, several hundred civilians remain, and humanitarian aid is being extended to those who stayed. The possibility of further evacuation efforts is under consideration for the coming months.
The forthcoming meeting at the White House could serve as a platform to discuss the outcomes of the humanitarian agreement and explore avenues for continued diplomatic engagement between Russia and Ukraine. However, specifics regarding the representatives attending and the agenda of the meeting have not been disclosed by the White House.
