During his visit to Calgary, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy secured a significant promise of support from Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who committed to bolstering Ukraine’s air defense and drone capabilities. The commitment includes C$350 million (US$253 million) dedicated to a United States-led initiative aimed at enhancing Ukraine’s military equipment, training, and other defense measures. This pledge comes amidst a surge in Russian missile and drone assaults on Ukraine.
In addition to military aid, Canada will provide C$450 million in loan guarantees focused on fortifying Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. This funding aims to facilitate repairs on damaged facilities, augment energy storage capacities, and ensure that vital services, such as hospitals, maintain a steady electricity supply.
Highlighting their long-term vision, Carney and Zelenskyy inked an agreement to forge a “hundred-year partnership” that spans defense, critical minerals, energy, and other cooperative sectors. This strategic partnership underscores the countries’ commitment to enduring collaboration in multiple areas.
In a further show of support, Canada announced that 30% of its new domestic drone production will be allocated to Ukraine. Zelenskyy indicated that these drones will play a crucial role on the battlefield, aiding Ukrainian forces and ensuring civilian protection.
Later this month, Zelenskyy is anticipated to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump in New York, possibly during the United Nations General Assembly. This meeting could be pivotal in rekindling diplomatic efforts aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict.
