President Donald Trump has a clear message for European allies: it’s time to step up and take the lead on providing security guarantees for Ukraine. He has been reinforcing this message in his recent diplomatic engagements, including a call with Russia’s Vladimir Putin.
The call with Putin came after a crucial August 18 meeting at the White House, where Trump hosted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European officials to discuss the very topic of long-term security for Kyiv.
While admitting that specifics are still under discussion, Trump’s principle of “European lead, U.S. backup” appears firm. “They should, because they are right there,” he stated, highlighting Europe’s geographical imperative.
These discussions are running parallel to a separate dialogue track with Russia on arms control. Trump revealed that during an August 15 meeting in Alaska, he and Putin discussed the possibility of reducing nuclear stockpiles once the Ukraine war is over.
