President Donald Trump is touting his personal relationship with Chinese President Xi Jinping ahead of their meeting in two weeks, saying, “I get along great with him,” as a basis for resolving the trade war.
This personal note comes as Trump also made a significant admission, calling the high tariffs on China “not sustainable.” He immediately blamed China for this, claiming, “they forced me to do that.”
Despite the “great” relationship, Trump remains cautious. “China is always looking for an edge,” he said. “I don’t know what’s going to happen. We’ll see what happens.”
The meeting is set to take place at the APEC summit in South Korea. It is a high-stakes discussion, as a 90-day truce that has kept the trade war from escalating is set to expire on November 10.
The president’s primary goal is a “fair deal.” He defended the tariffs, despite their “not sustainable” nature, as a necessary tool to achieve this, arguing the US would be “a nothing” without them.
