Both the US and Russia walked back President Trump’s plans for a Budapest summit on Tuesday. A US official stated “no plans” exist for a meeting in the “immediate future,” while the Kremlin said there is “no precise timeframe.”
The confusion began last week when Trump, after a call with Putin, posted on social media about a meeting within two weeks.
This spurred a “productive” call on Monday between US Secretary ofState Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov to arrange the details.
However, a US official speaking anonymously said Tuesday that a follow-up in-person meeting between the diplomats was “not necessary.”
This clarification effectively shelves the summit Trump announced. It comes as Trump was also scheduled to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to discuss providing US-made Tomahawk missiles capable of striking deep into Russia.
