An emergency meeting of the UN Security Council will convene on Friday at Poland’s request after Russian drones crossed into Polish territory earlier this week. Warsaw called the incident a “deliberate and coordinated attack” and urged allies to respond firmly.
Polish authorities reported 19 airspace violations and said drone fragments were found more than 300 miles inside the country. The incident marked the first time NATO forces have directly engaged Russian drones. Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski dismissed suggestions the incursion was accidental, stressing it lasted seven hours and involved several dozen drones.
While European allies expressed support for Poland, some NATO officials said it was too early to determine whether the incursion was intentional. Russia denied targeting Poland but avoided confirming or denying its involvement. Several European countries summoned Russian ambassadors in protest, with Sweden calling the violations “a threat to Europe’s security.”
Germany pledged to double the number of fighter jets it has deployed under NATO’s air policing mission and strengthen military support for Ukraine. Poland also announced plans to accelerate its military modernization, including delivery of new F-35 fighter jets from the US next year. Meanwhile, Warsaw temporarily closed airspace in its eastern regions to civilian flights as a precautionary measure.
