Polish President Karol Nawrocki has firmly rejected the European Union’s proposal to relocate illegal migrants to Poland, citing national security concerns and the country’s existing responsibilities.
In a letter addressed to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Nawrocki stated that Poland will not accept any EU-led actions aimed at compulsory migrant relocation. “Poland will not agree to any actions by European institutions that would aim to relocate illegal migrants to Poland,” he wrote.
The president emphasized that Poland continues to face migration pressure on its eastern border, orchestrated by Russia through Belarus, and is already supporting nearly one million Ukrainian war refugees. He highlighted Poland’s substantial humanitarian response following the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, stating, “Poland acted in solidarity, even though it was not bound by any obligation of solidarity.”
Nawrocki criticized forced relocation policies, arguing that they do not solve the root causes of migration and only increase tensions within EU member states. He called instead for strengthened border security and a focus on addressing instability in migrants’ countries of origin.
A demonstration titled “Stop Illegal Migration” and “No to the Mercosur Agreement” is scheduled to take place on October 11 at Castle Square in Warsaw. President Nawrocki is expected to attend.
“My goal is for Polish men and women to feel safe in their own country,” Nawrocki reiterated, firmly stating that Poland will not implement the EU’s Migration and Asylum Pact, while expressing willingness to cooperate on border protection and intelligence sharing.
