Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the President of Ukraine, has made a public appeal for direct negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin, suggesting a meeting take place in a neutral country as a step toward resolving the ongoing conflict. In a letter addressed to Putin, Zelenskyy proposed that talks could be held in locations like Switzerland, Turkey, or an Arab nation. He emphasized that crucial decisions about the war can only be achieved through direct dialogue between the two leaders and urged for a specific date to be set for these talks.
Zelenskyy’s proposal includes a commitment from Ukraine to enforce a complete ceasefire during the negotiations. As a gesture to build trust, he also suggested an all-for-all prisoner exchange and called for the return of Ukrainian civilians and children who have been displaced by the conflict. The call for negotiations comes amid continued military actions on both sides, with Russia increasing its aerial bombardments on Ukraine and Ukraine conducting long-range drone attacks within Russian territory.
Meanwhile, the possibility of a face-to-face meeting between Zelenskyy and Putin has been met with approval from former U.S. President Donald Trump. Trump stated that reaching a settlement would necessitate concessions from both parties involved in the conflict. This backing highlights the international interest in finding a diplomatic resolution to the ongoing war.
The Kremlin has acknowledged receipt of Zelenskyy’s message, confirming that Putin has been informed of the offer. However, Russian officials have indicated that they have not yet examined the proposal in detail, leaving the outcome of these potential talks uncertain for now.
