This summer’s fierce heatwaves have claimed at least 35,000 excess lives across Europe, with the true impact likely to be even greater as further evaluations are completed by additional countries. Germany, France, and Spain have been particularly hard hit, collectively accounting for over 25,000 of these excess deaths. Germany alone has reported about 14,000 heat-related fatalities from April to early August, marking the highest summer death toll from heat in the country’s recorded history. Meanwhile, Spain has experienced approximately 5,000 deaths attributed to heat since May, setting its own grim record.
In France, preliminary data indicates around 7,300 excess deaths occurred between late May and July, although this figure remains incomplete as it does not yet include August data. Other nations, such as the UK, Belgium, the Netherlands, Poland, and Switzerland, have also observed notable increases in mortality during periods of extreme heat. These heatwaves have seen temperatures soaring above 40°C in vast areas of western and central Europe, shattering numerous local and national temperature records.
Scientific experts attribute the rising frequency and severity of such extreme heat events to climate change. However, pinpointing heat-related deaths poses challenges, as the extreme temperatures often exacerbate existing health conditions, such as cardiovascular and respiratory issues, rather than being directly cited as the cause of death.
As the collection of delayed mortality data continues and figures for August are compiled, experts anticipate that the overall number of deaths across Europe will increase. The extent of these fatalities underscores the escalating public health threat posed by increasingly intense heatwaves.
