Austria is exploring the possibility of participating in Luxembourg’s GovSat 2 satellite communications initiative as both nations aim to bolster their defense and security ties. The consideration comes amid a visit to Luxembourg by Austria’s Defence Minister Klaudia Tanner, who engaged in talks with her counterpart, Luxembourg Defence Minister Yuriko Backes. The discussions focused on expanding bilateral cooperation in areas such as defense, space exploration, and cybersecurity.
During her visit, Tanner also met with representatives from SES, the satellite operator, to discuss Austria’s potential involvement in the GovSat 2 program. Tanner emphasized the increasing importance of secure satellite communications against the backdrop of rising geopolitical tensions. She noted that enhanced collaboration in this arena could significantly strengthen the resilience of state communications and support efforts towards achieving strategic autonomy for Europe.
The GovSat 2 project is designed to deliver secure communication services to Luxembourg’s defense sector, as well as the European Union, NATO, and partner countries. The satellite’s launch is planned for 2029, underlining the long-term nature of this strategic initiative.
In addition to discussions about satellite communications, Austria and Luxembourg have committed to deepening their cooperation across several defense-related domains. The two countries signed a letter of intent to enhance collaboration in cybersecurity, space technology, and military training. However, Austria has yet to disclose any specific investment figures regarding its potential participation in the GovSat 2 initiative.
