A scene of carnage unfolded near Delhi’s Red Fort on Monday night as a car explosion killed eight people and injured 19. The blast, which happened at a red light, was so powerful that witnesses reported feeling shock waves in nearby buildings. One witness described the horrific sight of a person’s body being “torn into pieces.”
The explosion took place just before 7 pm in the heavily congested Old Delhi area, a major tourist hub. According to Police Commissioner Satish Golcha, a car stopped at the light outside the Red Fort metro station detonated, and the subsequent “explosion damaged nearby vehicles.” Over a dozen cars, rickshaws, and motorcycles were left blackened and burned.
Emergency services, including dozens of fire engines and ambulances, responded to the incident. The 19 injured individuals were rescued from the scene and taken to a government hospital. A local resident, Om Prakash Gupta, described the chaotic aftermath, stating he saw “several vehicles on fire, body parts all over.”
The Indian government has launched a full investigation. Home Minister Amit Shah visited the site and said the cause is not yet known, pending forensic analysis. “We do not consider any angle closed,” Shah declared. The registered owner of the car has reportedly been detained.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered his condolences on X, stating he is reviewing the situation. In response to the blast, a high alert has been declared for major cities like Mumbai and the neighboring state of Uttar Pradesh, as well as for large train stations.
