Following weeks of absence from public view during the military confrontation, Iran’s Supreme Leader emerged looking significantly weakened. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s first televised appearance since the conflict began showed clear signs of strain, with the 86-year-old leader speaking in a hoarse voice and occasionally stumbling over words.
The Iranian leader’s speech addressed the damage inflicted on Iran’s nuclear program by US military strikes while disputing characterizations of complete destruction. International nuclear agency officials confirmed that bunker-buster bombs and cruise missiles had caused enormous damage to multiple atomic facilities.
Iran’s retaliatory strike against US forces in Qatar was presented by Khamenei as evidence of his country’s continued ability to project power across the region. He characterized this action as successful retaliation and warning that Iranian military capabilities remained intact despite the bombardment.
The ceasefire agreement has allowed Iran to begin the slow process of normalizing operations, with partial airspace reopening and gradual restoration of civilian activities. However, the country faces significant challenges in rebuilding its damaged nuclear infrastructure while maintaining its defiant international stance.
