The political acrimony surrounding the government shutdown deepened this week, exemplified by House Speaker Mike Johnson’s claim that Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer is afraid of a primary challenge from “communists.” This incendiary comment signals a collapse in civility and makes a negotiated settlement even more remote, a fact reflected in the Senate’s failed funding votes on Wednesday.
This collapse in political discourse is happening as the shutdown’s real-world consequences escalate. The funding lapse is now affecting air travel due to staffing shortages, and a financial crisis is imminent for hundreds of thousands of federal workers, including the military, who are slated to miss their next paycheck.
The policy dispute remains the official reason for the shutdown. Democrats are demanding that any funding bill also extend expiring Affordable Care Act (ACA) subsidies, a position they say is non-negotiable to protect the healthcare of 20 million Americans.
