A new diplomatic row is brewing between Israel and Turkey, as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has declared Israel will veto any Turkish role in a Gaza peacekeeping force. Netanyahu stated Sunday that Israel will have the final say on the force’s composition.
“Israel will determine which forces are unacceptable to us,” he said, citing the deep rift with President Erdogan. Netanyahu also claimed the US supports this position.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, in Israel, backed the principle of an “Israel-comfortable” force, though he did not single out Turkey. He also stressed that Hamas must be excluded from power.
This dispute comes as the Trump-brokered ceasefire appears to be unraveling. Hamas has not disarmed, and an Israeli strike on the Nuseirat camp, targeting alleged militants, was called a “clear violation” by Hamas.
The truce is also strained by the slow return of Israeli hostage remains. Donald Trump warned Hamas on Truth Social to speed up the process, but Hamas blames recovery delays on the extensive destruction.
