Polish President Rejects EU Migrant Relocation Plan, Citing National Security Risks

Polish President Karol Nawrocki has firmly rejected any European Union proposals to relocate illegal migrants to Poland, emphasizing that national security and the safety of Polish citizens remain his top priorities. In a letter to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Nawrocki stated that Poland “will not agree to any actions by European institutions aimed at relocating illegal migrants,” urging the EU to respect Warsaw’s stance.
Nawrocki highlighted that Poland has faced continuous migratory pressure along its eastern border for more than four years, which he attributed to actions orchestrated by Moscow and Belarus. He noted that Poland continues to dedicate significant resources to securing the EU’s external border while also providing support to nearly one million Ukrainian refugees still residing in the country.
The president argued that forced migrant relocation is not a viable solution to Europe’s migration crisis. Instead, he called for strengthening border controls, combating human smuggling, and addressing the root causes of migration in Africa and the Middle East. Nawrocki stressed that Polish public opinion overwhelmingly rejects any forced relocation mechanism imposed by Brussels.
Reaffirming his position, Nawrocki said he would oppose the implementation of the EU’s Migration and Asylum Pact in Poland but expressed readiness to cooperate on border protection, intelligence sharing, and technical support for EU member states facing high migratory pressure.
