A Polish court has dismissed a legal challenge from environmental groups opposing the construction of a deepwater container terminal in Świnoujście, paving the way for one of Poland’s largest maritime infrastructure projects to proceed.
The €585 million terminal, scheduled for completion by 2029, will allow two large container ships to dock simultaneously and forms part of a broader port development strategy in northern Poland. Despite objections from German and Polish environmental organizations regarding potential damage to Baltic Sea ecosystems, the court upheld the environmental clearance granted earlier this year.
Officials cited compliance with environmental regulations and the completion of required assessments in their decision. Although the ruling may be appealed, Polish authorities have reaffirmed the project’s strategic importance for national security and economic growth.
In total, over 10 billion złoty (€2.3 billion) is expected to be invested in related maritime infrastructure, with construction led by a consortium of Qatari and Belgian firms. This comes as Poland also expands its energy infrastructure, including a floating LNG terminal off the coast of Gdańsk.
