A chiropractor and spine specialist is urging people to consider their spinal alignment, not just during the day, but especially at night. He explained that the way you sleep determines how well your spine recovers from daily stress. He identified two common positions—stomach and tight-fetal—that disrupt this recovery by putting uneven pressure on the spine and straining nerves.
The specialist warned that the consequences of ignoring your sleep posture are serious. He stated that continuing to sleep in a misaligned position for years can lead to chronic back and neck pain and even a lasting posture imbalance. Your body needs to be in a neutral position to properly repair muscles, ligaments, and joints overnight.
The first position he “flagged” was sleeping on the stomach. He cautioned that this forces you to twist your neck to one side for hours, which can strain neck muscles and compress nerves in the cervical spine. He also noted that this “unnatural” position causes the lower back to arch, putting undue stress on the lumbar region.
The second problematic posture is the tight fetal position. The expert noted that many people “tuck their knees tightly to their chest, thinking it’s cozy.” However, he warned that “such a position rounds the spine too much.” This over-stretches the back muscles, tightens the hip flexors, and restricts deep breathing, which can lead to decreased flexibility and chronic mid-back pain.
To achieve a healthy, restorative sleep, the specialist recommends a position that maintains the spine’s natural curve. The best options are lying on your back with a small pillow under your knees, or on your side with a supportive pillow between your legs. These positions ensure your body weight is evenly spread, preventing strain and helping you wake up refreshed.
