President Trump has deemed a Canadian ad “fraudulent” and “fake,” and has terminated all trade negotiations with Canada as a result.
The ad, from the province of Ontario, used a 1987 clip of Ronald Reagan warning that “trade barriers hurt every American worker.” Trump claimed this was “egregious behavior.”
He further alleged the ad was an attempt to influence US supreme court hearings on the legality of his global tariffs. The tariffs on Canadian goods currently stand at 35%.
The ad’s use of the speech has been contested by the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation. The foundation said the “selective audio” “misrepresents” the full speech and that it is exploring legal action.
The suspension of talks, confirmed by secretary of state Marco Rubio, puts c$3.6 billion daily trade relationship in peril and escalates the ongoing trade war.
