The British sports car maker Lotus will remain firmly British, with no plans to relocate its production from its Norfolk factory. This definitive assurance was given to UK Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds, dispelling concerns that its Chinese owner, Geely, was considering a move to the US that would threaten 1,300 jobs.
An urgent meeting on Sunday served to clarify Lotus’s intentions after a temporary pause in production at Hethel had fueled speculation. A Department for Business and Trade spokesperson confirmed that Reynolds “was reassured by management that they are committed to their UK operations and have no plans to close their Hethel plant.”
Lotus had cited US tariffs as a reason for its production halt, but with these duties set to decrease significantly, the company is ready to restart. Lotus had previously emphasized that “the UK is the heart of the Lotus brand” and its largest European market, reinforcing the cultural and strategic importance of its Hethel base.
The government is also actively supporting the automotive sector through measures like reduced energy costs and substantial R&D funding, aligning with its industrial strategy. This commitment from Lotus ensures the continuation of a vital part of the UK’s high-value manufacturing landscape.
